Baby car seats: Perfect for the family trip

Baby car seats are required to take infants or toddlers safely on a ride in the family car. These specially made detachable seats can be fastened with the original seat of the car, and can hold the baby securely in position throughout the ride, protecting him/ her from injury. Car seats are made of tough polymer, and often come in bright colors to make these attractive for the baby.

The features you need to have in the car seat for your baby change as the baby grows up. Car seats come in three main varieties, namely, rear-facing, front-facing, and booster.

Rear-facing seats are perfect for infants who are just a few weeks old. These are simple to install and even simpler to use. All you have to do is put the baby in the seat and securely strap him/ her in place. If you are opting for this kind of seat, remember there are two types of strapping options available. 5-point straps secure the baby's shoulders, thighs, and crotch, and are considered to be the best strap option available for car seats. A 3-point system is also available, but it only supports the baby's shoulders and crotch, and is not so comfortable for the baby.

Front-facing seats are good for toddlers, who are at least one-year old. This type of car seat can be fitted to the back seat, and keeps the toddler secured while allowing him/ her to see outside the car. These are also available in 3-point strap or 5-point strap varieties, with the latter being the better of the two.

Booster seats allow toddlers to sit at a higher level than the car seat. These are good for toddlers who have grown up a bit. These seats must never be installed over the front seat of the car, because the airbag could injure or suffocate the toddler in the event of an accident. The seat holds the toddler securely in place while providing him/ her with a view of the outside. These seats have seatbelts just like regular car seats. Make sure the seatbelt supports your toddler's hips and shoulders, not the neck. Fasten the seatbelt accurately and you are off on a fun trip with your kid.
