Baby crib bedding: Helping babies grow properly

Newborn and little babies spend a lot of time sleeping. This is essential for them to stay healthy and grow up at a steady rate. As such, the bedding on which they sleep plays an important role in keeping them healthy. Baby crib bedding items should be chosen carefully. These should preferably be made of non-allergenic fibers. Some people have the belief that artificially synthesized fabrics are bad for babies. This is not entirely correct. Some non-allergenic synthetic fibers, such as, faux fur, Lycra, etc., are harmless for babies. For instance, faux fur blankets are great for keeping babies warm in winter months.

However, when purchasing crib bedding items for your baby, it is best to stick to cotton, preferably the organic variety. This is because organic cotton is free from all types of chemicals that are used to grow cotton by traditional methods. No chemicals are used in the processing of raw cotton, either. This makes the final product safe for babies.

Organic cotton is used in making various items used in baby crib bedding. Bed-sheets are made of organic cotton. Covers for mattresses, blankets, and quilts are also made if this material. Organic cotton is super-absorbent and easy to wash. The colors used in preparing organic cotton are completely natural, but do not get faded easily. Thus items made of organic cotton look like new for a long time.

Baby crib bedding usually consists of the following items:

  1. Mattress - Mattresses should be firm and without any lumps. Lumpy mattresses cause discomfort in babies, and in some cases, these give rise to back pain in babies as well.

  2. Mattress pads - The mattress is put on these pads in order to prevent it from shifting from its original position.

  3. Bumper pads - These are fixed to the mattress and kept pressed against the side walls of the crib, to prevent the baby from accidentally pushing his/her hand out of the crib through one of the gaps on the crib wall.

  4. Bed-sheets - These are what babies lie on in the crib. These must be made of anti-allergenic fibers, preferably organic cotton, so that these don't cause allergies in the baby.

  5. Blankets and quilts - These are essential in winter months for keeping the baby warm in the cold weather. However, if the baby is too small, blankets and quilts should not be used in a crib in order to prevent SIDS. Sleep sacks are a safer option in that case.

Baby crib bedding helps babies sleep comfortably and thus allows them to grow up faster. These items should be chosen carefully in order to provide maximum benefits to babies.
