Baby crib sheets: Natural fabrics are the way to go
Baby crib sheets are placed over baby mattresses in the crib. As such the neonate will come in direct contact with it at all times. This is the reason why parents are always advised to be careful when they are buying crib sheets for their baby. Synthetic fabrics are best avoided when it comes to crib sheets. These fabrics can cause allergies in some babies. Even those parents who have chosen mattresses made of synthetic fibers should only choose crib sheets made of natural fabrics for their baby.
Among natural fabrics, cotton is the most obvious choice, since it is the most hypo-allergenic fabric. Cotton crib sheets are naturally absorbent, and are usually machine-washable. Types of cotton crib sheets include:
-
Jersey Knit: This fabric has a smooth top side, and a textured bottom side. The fabric is machine-washable and comfortable for babies. It is quite durable and often lasts for years.
-
Cotton Flannel: It is a stout fabric with high durability. One side of flannel (the top side) is smooth, while the other side is comparatively rough. Flannel is super-absorbent, and keeps the top surface dry, owing to its thickness. This is great for babies who wet their beds frequently. Flannel is also machine-washable and highly durable. Apart from crib sheets, flannel also finds use in covers of baby blankets.
-
Cotton Percale: A smooth, luxurious cotton fabric, percale is widely used in the manufacture of crib sheets for babies. It is a bit fragile compared to other cotton fabrics and should be washed by hand. But, percale is one of the most comfortable fabrics available.
Once the perfect fabric has been chosen, it is time to consider the color of the sheet. Pastel sheets are good for baby girls, who prefer a sober color in their surroundings. Baby boys, however, prefer bright, vibrant colors in their crib sheets. Dark cherry, amber, mahogany, and light orange are good as colors of crib sheets for baby boys. Baby girls will be contented with colors like baby blue, mint, white, burgundy, etc., in their crib sheets. Make sure the color is non-toxic in nature. The baby might put a corner of the sheet in his/her mouth at some point of time.
Before you buy a crib sheet for your baby, make sure it is made of natural fabric, and colored with non-toxic colors only. This step alone will ensure to a great extent that your baby stays healthy and happy throughout his/her initial years.
