Baby furniture nursery: Play it safe

Baby nursery furniture should be completely safe for neonates. Babies have very sensitive skin, and also have the tendency to put in their mouth anything that they find at hand. These two reasons make it very important to find furniture that can keep them safe from accidents.

The following criteria should be kept in mind when looking around to buy furniture for the nursery of a baby:

  1. Babies have the tendency to put in their mouth anything they can find at hand. This make it very important to make sure that their crib furniture is colored only with non-toxic dyes. Also, make sure there are no small, detachable parts anywhere within the bedding. The baby may accidentally swallow it.

  2. High chairs have a tendency to topple if it receives an accidental push. To avoid this, choose high chairs with wide bases, the wider the better. These chairs distribute the weight over a greater surface area, and correspondingly have a lesser chance of toppling. Also, make sure that the legs of the chair don't end in tapered points. The legs should ideally have flat, wide bases to ensure greater stability and balance. Additionally, make sure that the guard desk and safety strap fitted with the high chair are of good quality. Your baby's safety depends on these attachments.

  3. Make sure that all the furniture pieces in a baby's nursery are splinter-free. Even the slightest splinter protruding from the seat of a wooden high chair can be extremely painful for the baby's tender skin. If you are purchasing a wooden furniture piece for your baby, check the entire surface thoroughly to make sure that there are no splinters. If you do find any, have it sanded off before you make the purchase. Similarly, watch out for sharp edges in furniture pieces made of polymer.

  4. Crib fittings must be strong, because these will hold up the baby's weight. The baby will grow heavier with each passing week, so the fittings have to be sturdy and secured enough to balance the gradually increasing stress.

  5. Make sure the playpen is spacious enough for your baby. Most parents forget that the baby is going to grow bigger with each passing week, and may soon outgrow the playpen. To avoid this, buy playpens that are quite large compared to the size of your baby. He/she will be able to use it longer and will also have plenty of space to move around.

Purchasing baby furniture is a delight for new parents. Just choose your furniture pieces carefully to provide long-term comfort and safety to your neonate.
