Baby room furniture: Check before you buy

Every parent wants to keep his/her baby safe from harm. Choosing the right type of furniture for your baby’s room is the first step towards accomplishing this difficult task. When choosing baby room furniture, keep in mind that safety is the most important criterion. The furniture should be able to protect the baby from harm, in case a minor accident occurs. Apart from that, it should also be colorful in order to capture the baby’s attention. Keep the following criteria in mind while shopping for your baby’s furniture.

  1. Sturdy construction - Baby furniture must be sturdy enough, not just for ensuring durability, but also for protecting the baby. Choose cribs, and playpens that are mounted on sturdy frames. High chairs should have a wide base, in order to minimize chances of toppling. Portable cribs/playpens should be particularly sturdy, because these will carry the baby for extended periods of time when you are out on a trip with him/her.

  2. Smooth surfaces - Babies have very sensitive skin. In order to prevent injuries, make sure the surfaces of baby furniture are completely smooth. There should be no splinters or any rough edges anywhere on the surfaces, on which the baby will sleep or stay seated. Check the surface thoroughly before purchase. Wooden furniture often has splinters. If you spot any, have the splinter sanded off before you buy, or pick another one.

  3. Bright colors - Babies are naturally attracted towards bright colors. Their furniture should sport vibrant hues of orange, red, green, yellow, and so on, so that they love staying in those. Cribs, in particular, should look attractive, since babies will spend most of their time sleeping anyway. High chairs should also have bright colors, so that babies won't mind sitting on those at least for some time, while they are being fed.

  4. High chair - As your baby grows up, chasing after your baby at mealtimes can be quite a chore. A high chair will keep your baby confined to a small space and make feeding him/her relatively easier. Make sure you choose a high chair with a wide base. Otherwise, your restless baby might accidentally tip over the chair.

  5. Cost-effective - Baby furniture is usually a little more expensive than adult furniture anyway. So, looking for a few good bargains cannot hurt. It is good to do a little market research before you go out to buy furniture for your baby. Ask your friends and relatives for some good leads. Then follow those up with personal visits.

Furniture for your baby should be sturdy, comfortable, and should come in vibrant hues. As long as these qualities are present, the cost of furniture cannot matter much in the first place. On top of that, if you get some good deals on offer too, all the better. Happy hunting!
