Baby Toys: Not just fun and frolic

Babies love playing with toys. As such, parents love to buy their kids lots of toys, so that they can see that beautiful, innocent smile more often. But, toys should not be just for fun. In fact, toys are the best tools for jumpstarting a baby’s learning process.

Parents should consider some important factors when purchasing a toy for their little bundle of joy. First of all, the toy should be absolutely safe for the baby. Parents should definitely look for the ‘CE’ mark on the toy, to ensure that it was tested for compliance with safety protocols. Toys without this mark may be potentially unsafe, and it is better to avoid those. Secondly, toys should not have any small detachable parts on them, in order to avoid any possible choking hazard for the baby. Thirdly, the toy should be sturdy enough. Babies can put their toys through a lot of punishment, and the toy must be strong enough to withstand that. Lastly, the age of the baby should be kept in mind. Toys that a three year old kid can safely play with may not be that safe for a six month old infant.

With these criteria in mind, parents can look for the perfect toys for their baby. The best toys are those that can entertain the baby for hours and also promote the learning process. Large wooden or plastic blocks in varied colors are usually great for babies of all ages, as long as these are colored with non-toxic dyes, and have no sharp ages or corners. Babies can start getting familiar with different shapes and colors, learning how to differentiate between colors.

Musical instruments are also great for babies aged six months or up. Babies love sounds of all kinds, so a drum set will give them something they can bat at with the sticks to create sound at will. Drum sets, and later on, toy pianos are great for babies. This can improve their reaction to sounds and help them learn the proper way of interacting with objects.

Plush toys are also great for babies of almost all ages. These toys are made of non-allergenic fibers and are warm to the touch. Infants can use these as makeshift blankets when they sleep. Slightly older babies can use these as punching bags, or hug them when they are feeling sad. Stuffed plush dolls are thus versatile in their uses and often last for years, becoming excellent keepsakes for the babies when they grow up.

Whatever toys are bought for the baby, those should be in bright colors. Babies do not like pastel shades, or whites and blacks. They love bright, contrasting colors, and so their toys should follow such color schemes.

Babies can learn a lot of things by playing with the appropriate kinds of toys. However, when they play under parental supervision, they are likely to receive more benefits from play. Playing together will also reinforce the bond between the parents and the baby in the long run.
