Purchasing clothes for a newborn infant is not an easy task. The sensitive skin of a newborn child needs to be protected from moisture. The body heat has to be preserved, especially in cold weather. Finally, the clothes must be easy to wash, to ensure that the inevitable “baby stains” can be easily removed.

When buying newborn baby wear, pay close attention to the fabric. Cotton is a great option, as it allows the skin to breathe. Cotton is also absorbent, easy to wash, and non-allergenic, making it one of the best options for newborn baby clothing. However, cotton will not preserve much body heat in cold weather. If you love to dress up your baby in cotton, that’s great. But make sure you have good baby blankets handy for winter and monsoon seasons. Apart from ordinary cotton, cotton flannel, and brushed cotton are also great options. However, if you are looking for some variety, you can opt for lycra or polyester. Both these materials are known to be stretchable and weather-proof. These will preserve body heat and keep the baby warm, even on winter nights. The drawback is that these will not soak the moisture easily, and if you let your baby sleep in diapers, you will have to check the diaper frequently, to make sure it isn’t wet.

Opt for Merino wool outfits to keep your baby warm in winter, especially if you put cotton clothing on him/her. Merino wool is prepared by natural methods, without any chemicals. It is never colored with any synthetic dye either. This makes it an anti-allergenic fabric that can be washed easily. Faux fur is another good option as clothing material. It is an anti-allergenic, synthetic fiber that helps preserve body heat.

Always choose those kinds of clothes for your newborn that can be removed easily. Avoid clothes that have to be pulled over the head. Outfits with buttons in the front are best. Outfits with zippers should be avoided till the baby is at least three years old. Also, make sure there are as few buttons as possible to prevent accidental choking.
